Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) represents a biological treatment for various musculoskeletal injuries involving tendons, ligaments, cartilage and bone. It is a refined product of autologous blood (the patient’s own blood) with a platelet concentration greater than that of whole blood. It is rich in growth factors (GFs) and cytokines that have been shown to initiate and promote healing by stimulating cell migration, cell proliferation, angiogenesis and matrix synthesis.
Preparation:- To develop a PRP preparation, blood must first be drawn from a patient. The platelets are separated from other blood cells and their concentration is increased by spinning the blood down during a process called centrifugation. These platelets are then injected into the injured site.
Indications-
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) may accelerate soft tissue healing via growth factors released after platelet degranulation. With this potential benefit, patients are injected with PRP for the treatment of tendon, ligament, muscle, and cartilage injuries and early osteoarthritis.
PRP has been used to treat professional athletes with common sports injuries like pulled hamstring muscles in the thigh and knee sprains.
Chronic tendon injuries like Tennis Elbow, Achilles Tendonitis( Heel tendon) and patellar tendon inflammation ( Jumper’s knee).
Acute injuries of Ligaments & tendons also respond very well to PRP therapy.
